Southern Resident Killer Whale Baby Boom
In the last several months we have been fortunate to have so many new babies! The Center for Whale Research has confirmed that 9 new calves have born since December 2014. The newest calf, J55, was just documented for the first time January 18, 2016. Unfortunately on the same day J31 was observed with a deceased new calf. Of the 9 new calves born only one is confirmed as female and four are confirmed males, which may be due to toxic contaminants in the water called persistent organic pollutants (POPs).
