A family of killer whales and calm seas

Anacortes Location

6/12/22

Our trip began under partly cloudy skies as we crossed Rosario Strait. There were several harbor porpoise spotted throughout our journey. We spotted a red-tailed hawk on Bell Island. I don't know if I ever have seen a red-tailed hawk on a whale watching trip before, it was pretty awesome. We cruised through Pole Pass and out toward San Juan Channel. We found killer whales swimming north in the channel. It was the T123 family, consisting of T123, T123A, T123B, and T123D. They swam together as they continued north. After a while with our killer whale friends, Captain Matt took us to Flat Top Island where we were treated to several harbor seals, numerous pigeon guillemots, and even an immature bald eagle perched on the National Wildlife Refuge sign posted on the island. Then we took at peak at Spieden Island, but the deer and sheep must have been up among the trees hiding from the sun which had broken through the clouds. As we turned to head back to homeport, we caught up with our killer whales for a few more minutes. We headed home under blue skies and calm seas.
