Today was one of those fabulous days; sunny, warm and whales galore! After a quick search through the outer islands, our boat took off for the Candian Gulf Islands to search for whales. We came across a lone humpback juvenile, and were able to spend some time observing his behavior.
This smaller juvenile was kind enough to rest at the surface at longer intervals so we could get a good look at him. As you can see, his Tubercles are visible! Each Tubercle is about the size of a human fist and contains one single sensitive hair.
After some time watching this beautiful humpback, he continued diving and we thought we saw him pop up a few hundred yards away. When we took a closer look, we saw it was an orca! We had found the T034's!
T034, named "Grace," was born in 1969, swimming next to her calf, T034B, born in 2017.
We were able to spend the rest of our afternoon watching them scout and hunt. We even saw a harbor seal in the water narrowly evade these apex predators!
We love being the boat that finds whales! Even more than that, we love being the boat that finds multiple species in one day! Everyone had a whaley good time!
