Gray whale and killer whales out of Anacortes today!

06-25-22

Anacortes Location

Another gorgeous day in the Salish Sea! We started out under sunny skies with flat calm waters. We headed south on our journey and through Deception Pass. Just off Hope Island, we found our first whale of the day! It was a gray whale! This particular whale is a new one to the area, first sighted off the waters of Victoria in February. We had some great looks as s/he cruised against the tide. We headed back out under Deception Pass and Captain Trevor spotted a Steller sea lion eating a spiny dogfish. The Steller was thrashing the dogfish, ripping it into tiny pieces to eat. He finished up his meal and we pushed further to the north through Rosario Strait. We went through Thatcher Pass and up toward Eastsound. It was here where we encountered the T37As, spread out. It appeared as if they had just eaten and were acting a little bit playful. We had plenty of tail lobs and splashing around. We spent some time with these whales as they headed through Obstruction Pass. At Obstruction Pass, they took a turn to the north and we turned south and headed back toward home port.
