It's always a special day when the killer whales are traversing the islands and we don't have to travel too far to find them! This means we get to spend more time on scene with them and therefore have the honor and opportunity of making prolonged behavioral observations.
The T099's join up with the T036's in Rosario Straight
Today we got to watch the T036 and T099 matrilines hunting and traveling around the shores of our very own Orcas Island! They made several successful kills and shared the spoils of the hunt among themselves. We watched their strategy when they broke into smaller groups and drove the prey (harbor seals) towards each other for ambushing, and then later as they came back together after feeding to move on to the next feeding opportunity. All in all a fabulous observation day!
