Learning about Islands, Watching Whales

We started off this morning with gray skies and a slight breeze. As we approached Saturna Island, the clouds started to part and we saw our first spout of the day.

A whale! We watched him surface and dive several times, trying to guess where he would rise up next and patiently waiting for the “whoosh” of his exhale.

Then on our way over to Patos Island, our boat skating over the glassy water, we spotted a couple of harbor porpoises cruising alongside us. The lighthouse was backlit by beautiful snowy peaks as we scanned the shoreline for eagles and seals. We even found an eagle nest!

Next stop was Sucia Island. We saw more bald eagles and talked about the geology of the area, taking special notice of the unique honeycomb weathering in the sandstone walls.

What a nice day!
