A Minke Whale feeds near Cattle Point
Today we got this year's second Minke whale sighting! Minke whales are the smallest baleen whale in the world and, ironically, the most common whale in the world! Just not too common a sighting for us! We call them "Stinky Minkes" for two reasons; their breath is quite fishy! They also have tendencies to be quite elusive and can dive down and pop up a mile away in any direction, diving again when you finally catch up, making them quite difficult to study and observe.

Today two Minke whales were feeding on bait balls. It was quite amazing to watch; they follow the birds' movement as they feed on the bait fish, and they pop up from underneath, disturbing the birds while they feed. It was very cool to watch them feeding and not being so elusive!
