T137A "Jack" on the shore of Saturna Island, Canada
One of the most popular questions we have had since Covid is about the border - can we cross it now? Are we allowed to go to Canadian waters to watch whales? The border was closed to us during Covid and we had to bitterly watch the whales disappear into the horizon, hoping that they would wander back our way. After all, to the whales it's all one area and the imaginary line is simply that - imaginary.
According to the final border decision (1873) we are allowed to cross into each other's waters, so long as we don't dock or tie off to another boat, etc. And while these rights were suspended during Covid, we are happy to report that as of now, August 2022, we are celebrating one year of the border being back open to us! And it has been a wonderful year, with lots of action in both Canadian and US waters. So yes, the answer is thusly: If the whales go to Canada, we will be going too! It's so much fun to take people "out of the country" for their very first time! Smiles all around!
