“That’s an Orca?!”

Writer's picture: Kaylee HubenKaylee Huben

This weekend we’ve seen lots of different orca pods. The T036s, T099s, T049s and the T137s! That’s over 20 individuals sighted in just a few days! With all that orca action, I’ve got to witness many people see orcas for their very first time.

When I tell kids that an orca’s dorsal fin can be taller than they are, their eyes get wide...But there’s nothing like the first hand experience of seeing that big of an animal glide through the water with such grace and power. It’s fun to talk about and imagine what they’re getting up to under the surface...But it takes your breath away to see an orca launch its 12,000 pound body completely out of the water!

And what’s cuter than an orca calf learning how to hunt with their family? Not much!

We’ve really had some amazing experiences so far this summer. Experiences that I know wont be easy to forget.
