Anacortes location
Today our journey took us through the inner San Juan islands. We cruised through flat calm waters under overcast skies. We stopped by Flat Top Island where we learned about the geology of the area. We also spotted dozens of harbor seals, several pigeon guillemots, and a bald eagle perched up in a tree. We crossed the border to Canada where we encountered our first whale of the day! It was a humpback whale. We had several surfacings each time she emerged from her deep dive. Based on the dorsal fin, we believe this animal to be BCX1658 “Bullet.” We spent quite a bit of time with her as she cruised north in Boundary Pass. After a while, we moved further to the east in search of more animals. We came across two more humpback whales! These animals were on nine minute deep dives. We had a couple of great looks and even saw two flukes from these animals. Our colleagues got better ID shots of these animals than we did, so thanks to our friend Tasli, we now know that we had BCY1062 “Solar” and BCX0854 “Europa.” We continued our search a different route home and enjoyed more calm waters and beautiful views.
